About Katie DeBock Eccles, MSW, LCSW
Founder & Clinical Director
Katie DeBock Eccles is not your typical therapist.
With a background in technology and education, Katie came to therapy through the side door. What she loved most about teaching people how to use computers was helping to make their lives easier, changing their lives. But when the Twin Towers fell in 2001, she found herself deeply evaluating the meaningfulness of her work.
That’s when she embarked on discerning what that means to her… and exploring how she could change people’s lives more profoundly. That’s when she switched gears to pursue a master’s in social work.
“If someone comes to see me, they're going to learn that there's someone else in the world who is genuinely interested in what is troubling them and is looking for creative solutions.”
—Katie DeBock Eccles
Now a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Certified Advanced Child, Youth and Family Social Worker (C-ACYFSW), Katie enjoys working with teens, young adults, and families—especially those who are hesitant to open up, tired of being judged, or unsure therapy is even for them. She brings a brain-based, solution-focused approach that avoids empty platitudes and meets clients where they are. Her work is rooted in the belief that people already hold what they need to heal—it’s her job to help them access it.
Katie’s style is direct, strategic, and deeply compassionate. She doesn’t flinch from complexity—whether it’s trauma, family dysfunction, or identity exploration—and believes the best therapeutic work happens when there’s trust and accountability.
As the founder and clinical director of Thrive Therapeutic Services, Katie leads not only with clinical expertise but with a commitment to cultivating a healthy, collaborative team culture. She brings the same thoughtful, empowering presence to her role as a supervisor, mentoring emerging therapists as they move toward full licensure. She fosters an environment where clinicians are supported, challenged, and deeply respected—creating a ripple effect that directly benefits the clients they serve.
Katie is also an experienced speaker and educator, having presented to audiences including the Chicago Public Schools on topics such as play therapy versus Theraplay®. Her professional background spans early childhood special needs, parenting teens with mental illness, and work in long-term psychiatric care, all of which inform her deeply holistic and nuanced perspective.
She also brings lived experience to the work. As someone who’s navigated life on public aid, attended inner-city schools, and is part of the LGBTQIA+ community, Katie understands the nuance behind what people present—and what they carry. She is an advocate for diverse, inclusive care that acknowledges the full scope of a person’s identity.
Katie’s Story… A year into her master’s program, a mentor challenged Katie to sit on the other side of the couch. Many therapists come to the work after experiencing how therapy transformed their lives—but for Katie, this was a first! As much as she knew therapy helped people find healing, a part of her was still skeptical of the therapy process. (Sound familiar?)
That experience changed everything. It revealed how powerful therapy could be—not as a top-down fix, but as a space for honest reflection, deep self-work, and real healing. Because there is no sugar-coating or avoiding the (uncomfortable, sometimes painful) real work of therapy. And that’s why Katie has a soft spot for folks who come to therapy, arms folded, wary of the process… Because she used to be one of them!
Katie founded Thrive Therapeutic Services to create a practice that offers real talk, real support, and real transformation. It’s not about fixing people—it’s about walking with them as they reclaim their power, with clarity, care, and the tools to build lasting change.
